The Story of Vanda Astri, Garuda Indonesia's First Papua Pilot

The Story of Vanda Astri, Garuda Indonesia's First Papua Pilot

A proud achievement was carved by two students from Papua and West Papua who were studying in the Kiwi country, New Zealand. They became the first pilots on the airlines Garuda Indonesia and Citilink.
.
"The two students namely Vanda Korisano and Martha Itaar, both of whom arrived in the Kiwi country in 2014," the Indonesian Ambassador to New Zealand, Samoa and the Kingdom of Tonga Tantowi Yahya were quoted as saying by ANTARA.
.
According to Ambassador Tantowi, both were students from Bumi Cenderawasih from around 150 students and scholarship recipients from the Special Autonomy (Otsus) Fund of the Papua Provincial Government who were educated at Nelson Aviation College, New Zealand.
.
Meanwhile Vanda Astri Korisano did not expect him to be the first generation to recruit Papuan pilots from Papua who joined the Garuda Indonesia Group. The woman who was born on April 29, 1996 was also one of two female pilots recruited by Garuda Indonesia.
.
Working in the field of aviation, let alone being a pilot, has been his dream since childhood. Vanda told how he used to love being at the airport. "When I was a kid, when I went with my family on a plane, I really liked the airport, I don't know, just like the atmosphere," he told Kompas.com on Friday (08/16/2019).
.
As a teenager, his desire to work in aviation is getting stronger. One thing he thinks about, is being a flight attendant or pilot. With discussions with family, the pilot finally became his choice.
.
Support does not only come from the family. Vanda said, when attending SMAN 1 Jayapura, his teachers also encouraged him to go to school as high as possible so that his goals would be achieved. "Because I love English, and that is important for the pilot profession, my teachers encourage me to have a good college as well, looking for scholarships," he said.
.
He then received a scholarship from the Government of the Papua Province and underwent his first six months of education at the International Pacific College, New Zealand. Vanda then continued her Aviation for Airline Preparation diploma at Nelson Aviation College New Zealand. He graduated in January 2018.
.
After completing his diploma education, Vanda attended education at Genesa Flying Academy, Cilacap. Then after being accepted at Garuda Indonesia, he took a pilot education at the Garuda Indonesia Training Center (GITC) in early August 2019.
.
From the beginning, his parents had never forbidden him to become whatever he liked. "As long as there is commitment and responsibility, parents support, especially daddy," said the fourth daughter of five siblings.
.
Vanda's parents have not been around since 2018. However, when he first said he would become a pilot, his parents were always supportive, and happy with his decision.
.
"My parents must be very proud there, because from the start they were really supporting me," said the woman who won the first place in the "Non-Native Speaker" category in a foreign language contest in New Zealand.
.
After being accepted at Garuda Indonesia, Vanda's dream was simple. He hopes this achievement will be an inspiration for other young people, especially in Papua.
.
"I hope other Papuan friends come along too, they can catch up," he concluded.
