Alternative electricity generation with solar energy sources or commonly referred to as Solar Power Generation (PLTS) becomes one of the new renewable energy that will be used by PT PLN (Persero) Main Territory of Papua and West Papua (IUWP2B) in electrifying Bumi Cenderawasih.

PLTS is right for areas that are difficult to reach by land transportation. The use of PLTS also saves the Cost of Providing Costs (BPP) up to 1,400 KWh compared to the Diesel Power Plant (PLTD).

The Assistant Manager of Communications of PT PLN IUWP2B, Septian Pujiyanto said that currently the use of PLTS has been implemented on Rumberpon Island, Papua and in several other locations.

"PLTS does not need fuel. The energy source from PLTS is available from nature, namely the sun. How to operate and maintain PLTS is relatively simpler than fuel generation. If PLTS maintenance is good, it can be used for up to 20 years, "he explained.

Septian said, basically PLTS is very possible to be applied in Papua. For example, the installation of PLTS was once carried out in Deiyai ​​Regency with a capacity of 2 MWp. "What is very sad is that the PLTS panel in Deiyai ​​has been stolen or damaged by irresponsible persons," he said.

Septian added, if PLTS is to be installed again in a regency or village or other areas, then there must be a joint commitment of the government and all parties to protect this PLTS.

Even so, the local PLN targets that in 2020 PLTS will be built in zones in Sorong, Timika, Merauke, and Jayapura (Papua, Indonesia).
