Resolving Conflict in Papua, Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security will Use Various Approaches

The government will strengthen efforts to resolve conflicts in Papua and West Papua by using the welfare approach and legal approaches. The Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD said the problems in Papua would be resolved soon.

"In general there are no new policies in the handling of Papua. The welfare approach, only later the coordination will be further strengthened," Mahfud said at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Politics and Security, Central Jakarta, Friday (12/27/2019).

The welfare approach in question is a government program from various agencies, such as the Ministry of Trade, Industry, to the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR).

In addition to the welfare approach, the government also uses a legal approach. The approach was taken based on the aspirations of the people of Papua. When he arrived in Papua, Mahfud admitted that the majority of the community requested that the law be enforced, especially against officials who misuse state finances.

"Because it will not attract the sympathy of people who misuse state finances even if they are prosecuted, it will not cause worse problems for the situation in Papua," he concluded.
