Building Dekranasda, West Papua Provincial Government Supports Local Craftsmen Business

Now, West Papua Province has a Gallery of the Regional National Crafts Council (Dekranasda) which was recently inaugurated by the local Governor, Dominggus Mandacan. On the same occasion, Dominggus also inaugurated the Dekranasda Secretariat Building and opened the West Papua Province Dekranasda Working Meeting (Raker) on Thursday 28 November 2019.

The Governor of West Papua also carried out cooperation with Dekranasda which was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). "The MoU is carried out so that the work program of the craft council in West Papua is more advanced and independent under the leadership of the Chair of Dekranasda, Mrs. Juliana Mandacan and this is a manifestation and determination of the government to improve itself in supporting craftsmen and connoisseurs of cultural arts," he said.

The Chairperson of West Papua Dekranasda, Ny Juliana Mandacan said that there is a lot of potential of local handicrafts in the area, so that the inauguration of the gallery can accommodate the results of craftsmen from indigenous Papuans, for example knitting noken, sculpture and others.

The Head of the National Dekranas Center, Grace Claudia Batubara, appreciated the persistence of the Chairperson of the West Papua Dekranasda, Mrs. Yuliana Mandacan, empowering local craftsmen, one of whom was visiting Batik Write Paras Jogja, in order to improve the quality of West Papua's unique handicraft products based on technology and West Papua's cultural heritage.

"By exploring the design and color motifs, the meaning and philosophy can be expressed in the form of handicrafts made from fabric raw materials, among others by the machine canting technique called Klowong batik, so that the characteristics of West Papua batik contain local content," he said.

On that occasion, the Governor of West Papua handed over symbolic outboard engines and lamp sales to native Papuan entrepreneurs.
