Mangrove Forests Become Mimika's Top Travel Destination during PON 2020

The Mimika Regency Government, Papua, is developing mangrove tourism in the Pomako area, East Mimika District. Mimika's Head of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports Agency Moh Thoha said that the development of mangrove forest tourism is certain to be completed this year so that it will become one of the destinations during the upcoming PON XX in 2020.

The construction of the mangrove tracking road in the area of ​​the Pomako Fish Landing Port (PPI) has been completed this year. The project to develop a phased tourism destination in the past two years is continuing. This year there will be an additional 500 meters of trekking.

In addition, there are also the addition of MCK, gasebo, parking lots, and tower of view will be a priority this year. The tower of view will be used to monitor the activities of mangrove forest visitors later.

"Then, the completed education building will be the entrance to mangrove forest tourism. The government collaborates through USAID Lestari to provide educational media in the form of pictures and writings on 29 types of mangroves in Mimika," said Thoha.

In addition to its natural attractions, this mangrove forest tour will also be made as an educational and scientific tourism destination.

"Students or researchers who want to conduct research may visit here because Mimika is the only one that has 29 species of mangroves, compared to only 17 other areas," he said.
